Sasha in the sun.

You learn a lot cooped up with a cat.  Even when you think there’s nothing to do, she’ll find something for both of you. Like enjoying a shaft of sunlight in the apartment house hall. Or — if you can’t easily get down on the floor — enjoying the sight of her.

    Well, I thought you had dropped me from your distribution list (I know you weren’t a victim of my spam filter), or even worse, given up on your wonderful writing, but now you’ve returned, just in time to help lift my spirits in these bleak days. I’m so glad! I see I have got a lot of catching up to do, but I’ve got the time to do it (I’d do it anyway)! I hope you are well!

    • Jerry! What a nice surprise. I don’t even know how to find my WordPress distribution list, so I couldn’t have dropped you from it. Maybe you, ah, inadvertently “unfollowed?” Where did you leave off? Posts ago? Or years ago? In any event, thank you for coming back to read “On Being Old” again — in reverse chronological order. I will continue this reply by private email. The blogosphere doesn’t have to know everything we may choose to write in catching up!

    • It’s cats, Leslie, not cat. I have two. The one in this photo is Sasha, born in 2009. The cat in the previous (long) post is Sophie, the “thousand dollar” cat, born in 2012. Yes, Sasha is the beauty of the family, a perfect example of the breed. In fact, the breeder was going to keep her, but she owed us a kitten because of a mixup on the one we had put a deposit on. Our luck! The breed is British Blue, a variant of British Shorthair; they all have large round heads, furry round cheeks, chunky bodies and short strong legs, and of course they’re a blue-grey color. Sophie is also a British Blue, although her looks deviate a bit from the standard. However, you’re right, both cats are very easy on the eye. Thank you for noticing Sasha’s “specialness.” I agree 100%!

    I loved this!  Sent it to my cat lover owner daughter who also loved it!  Are you hanging in there with the crazy virus?  It’s getting a bit tedious with no end on sight.  And no, I haven’t done anything productive, like cleaning closets or drawers…nada…but I’ve become an expert at frittering….Hope you’re fine and dandy ….xoxo

    • Happy you loved it. Happy cat-lover daughter also loved it. And so far I’m, I guess you could say, fine and dandy.

      But I’m trying to do more than hang in there. “Hanging in there” sounds as if we’re dangling over a precipice. Actually, we’re quite physically comfortable at home. So take a lesson from my cats. Frittering is good. Doing “nothing” is good. Everything is good. Or, given your “no end in sight” view of things, tune in to the delights of your breath (in through the nose, out through the mouth), the feel of your tush on the chair, the sounds around you. Tai chi yourself into joy. Walk around your little house while listening to an informative or uplifting podcast. Or even adopt a cat. None of that is nada. xoxox right back.
